This breed is a result of intentional crossbreeding between Siamese and Burmese cats, combining the best traits of both parent breeds. The development of the Tonkinese began in the 1960s in North America when breeders sought to create a cat with the vocal nature and sleek body of the Siamese and the muscular build and soft coat of the Burmese. The first Tonkinese cats, originally referred to as "Golden Siamese," were bred to enhance the unique characteristics of both parent breeds, resulting in a cat with a playful and social demeanor. The breed was officially recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1984 and The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1979. Tonkinese cats are known for their moderate, well-balanced build and beautiful, shimmering coats. They have gained popularity for their charming personalities and striking appearance, making them a favorite among cat enthusiasts.
