The Selkirk Rex is a unique cat breed known for its curly coat, which is a result of a natural genetic mutation. This breed originated in the United States in 1987 when a curly-coated kitten was discovered in a litter of otherwise normal domestic shorthair kittens in Montana. This kitten, named Miss DePesto, was adopted by Persian breeder Jeri Newman, who began a breeding program to develop the Selkirk Rex as a distinct breed. Miss DePesto was bred to a black Persian, and the resulting litter contained curly-coated kittens, indicating that the curly coat gene was dominant. This discovery led to the development of the Selkirk Rex breed, characterized by its plush, curly fur and sturdy build. The breed was named "Selkirk" in honor of Jeri Newman's stepfather, making it one of the few cat breeds named after a person. The Selkirk Rex was recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1992 and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 2000.
