To achieve this, they crossed Siamese cats with domestic black cats and Russian Blues, resulting in a cat with a distinctive brown coat. The breed was initially known as the "Chestnut Brown Foreign" and was recognized by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in 1958. The breed was introduced to the United States in the mid-20th century, where it gained popularity and further development. The breed's name was eventually changed to Havana Brown, possibly inspired by the color of Havana cigars. The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) recognized the Havana Brown in 1959, and it has since become a cherished breed for its unique appearance and affectionate nature.
