The Foldex cat, also known as the Exotic Fold, is a hybrid breed developed in Canada in the early 1990s. The breed was created by crossing Scottish Folds with Exotic Shorthairs to combine the distinctive folded ears of the Scottish Fold with the plush, dense coat and round features of the Exotic Shorthair. The goal was to create a cat with a unique appearance that retained the gentle, affectionate nature of both parent breeds. The Foldex is still a relatively new and rare breed, primarily recognized by the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) in 1995. Breeders have worked to develop the Foldex with an emphasis on maintaining its health and distinct characteristics, including the unique ear fold and plush coat. Due to the genetic mutation that causes the ear fold, responsible breeding practices are essential to prevent health issues. As with Scottish Folds, breeding two folded-ear cats together is generally avoided to reduce the risk of skeletal deformities.
