The Egyptian Mau is an ancient breed of cat known for its striking appearance and natural spotted coat. It is often believed to have originated in Egypt, where cats have been revered for thousands of years. The breed is thought to be one of the few naturally spotted domestic cats, with its lineage potentially dating back to the cats depicted in ancient Egyptian art and hieroglyphics. The modern history of the Egyptian Mau began in the mid-20th century when a Russian princess named Nathalie Troubetskoy brought several Mau cats from Egypt to Italy and later to the United States. She established a breeding program to preserve the unique characteristics of the breed, which included their distinct spots, graceful build, and friendly temperament. The Egyptian Mau was officially recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1977 and The International Cat Association (TICA). Today, the breed is admired for its elegance, athleticism, and affectionate nature.
