The California Spangled Cat is a breed that was developed in the 1980s with the goal of creating a domestic cat that resembled a wild leopard. The breed was the brainchild of Paul Casey, a Hollywood scriptwriter and playwright. Casey was inspired to create the California Spangled Cat after visiting Africa and observing the plight of leopards and other big cats threatened by poaching. He wanted to raise awareness about wildlife conservation by creating a domestic cat with a similar spotted appearance to that of wild cats. Casey collaborated with geneticists and breeders to develop the breed by crossing various domestic cats, including the Abyssinian, American Shorthair, and British Shorthair, along with other spotted breeds, such as the Egyptian Mau. The result was a cat with a strikingly wild appearance, characterized by its leopard-like spots and athletic build. The California Spangled Cat was introduced to the public in 1986 and gained significant attention when it was featured in a Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog. Despite its initial popularity and high-profile launch, the breed never became widely popular and remains relatively rare today.
