The Australian Mist is a relatively new breed that originated in Australia in the late 1970s. This breed was developed by Dr. Truda Straede, who aimed to create an affectionate, indoor cat with a distinctive spotted coat. To achieve this, she selectively bred Burmese, Abyssinian, and domestic shorthair cats. The goal was to combine the Burmese’s affectionate nature, the Abyssinian’s lively temperament and ticked coat pattern, and the domestic shorthair’s diversity of color. The result was a cat with a misty, spotted coat and a loving disposition. Originally named the Spotted Mist, the breed was renamed the Australian Mist in 1998 to reflect the addition of marbled patterns. The Australian Mist was officially recognized by the Australian Cat Federation (ACF) and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy Australia and Victoria (GCCFV) in the 1980s. It is now recognized by various international cat associations and has gained popularity for its friendly nature and unique appearance.
