The American Bobtail is a relatively new breed that originated in the United States in the late 1960s. The breed began when a couple discovered a feral cat with a short, stubby tail in Arizona and named him Yodie. After breeding Yodie with a domestic cat, they discovered the bobtail trait was genetic. Breeders then developed the breed by selectively breeding domestic shorthairs and longhairs to maintain the distinctive bobtail trait and diversify the gene pool. The American Bobtail was officially recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in the 1980s and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 2000. Known for its friendly personality and wild bobcat-like appearance, the American Bobtail is now a popular and beloved breed.
